About this course
University of Sussex offers Social Anthropology PhD as a 4-year doctoral Ph.D. programme in Anthropology. Based in Brighton, the programme is delivered by the university's specialist faculty and welcomes international applicants from across Africa and beyond.
Tuition is £23,500 per year. English-language entry requires IELTS 6.5 overall. Intakes run across 4 windows (Autumn (September), 2026 and Spring (January), 2027…).
Scholarships are available to international applicants. The programme includes an industry internship element.

Entry requirements
Degree requirements - You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60percentage overall) in a Masters degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree. Subject-specific requirements - Your qualification should be in anthropology or a closely-related subject area. In exceptional circumstances, you may be considered for the degree if you have a qualification in a different subject area. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing. We also offer a Doctoral pathway which incorporates the MSc in Social Research Methods or further specialist research training modules within Year 1 for those without the required research training.
