About this course
Durham University offers BA (Hons) Japanese Studies (with Year Abroad) as a 4-year undergraduate Bachelor Degree with Honours programme in Language and Literature. Based in Durham, the programme is delivered by the university's specialist faculty and welcomes international applicants from across Africa and beyond.
Tuition is £27,500 per year. English-language entry requires IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 92. Intakes run across 2 windows (Michaelmas (October), 2026 and September, 2026).

Entry requirements
You are not expected to have any previous knowledge of Japanese, but if you do have an A level (or equivalent) in Japanese, then you can enter the Advanced stream from Year 1.A level offer – AAB. Grade A in History is required, if taking the History option.BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma/OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma – DDD. Grade A in History is required, if taking the History option.IB Diploma score – 36 with 665 in higher level subjects. Please see above for subject requirements.
